Virginia-Highland Church will open The Beatitudes of Broadway, a theatrical sermon series based on Broadway musicals, on Sunday, September 15, during its 11 a.m. worship service. Featuring Co-Pastors Michael Piazza and Cameron Trimble, as well as the music ministry and special guests, The Beatitudes of Broadway is the guaranteed hit of the fall season! Virginia-Highland Church is located at 743 Virginia Avenue NE, on the corner of Virginia Ave. and Ponce Place. The services are free and open to all.
The series will open with a sermon based on “Les Misérables” and special guest vocalists Bryant Smith and Kevin Harry, who recently completed a sold-out run of the mega-musical as Jean Valjean and Javert at Lawrenceville’s Aurora Theatre. Both performances earned Suzi Bass Award nominations as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical. Other featured musicals in the series will include “The Phantom of the Opera,” “Wicked,” “Rent,” and this year’s winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical, “Kinky Boots.”
“Jesus was such an effective communicator because he used the cultural images of his day to illustrate spiritual truths,” said Rev. Piazza, the church’s senior pastor, “and we try to do the same, using excerpts from children's books, popular movies, and more as modern lessons. This series, featuring the divine messages found in Broadway musicals, will take it a step further!”

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and President Jimmy Carter, Virginia-Highland Church seeks to embody the values of justice and peace for which they both worked so hard.
