Albers: "Imperative" To Find Ways To Slash Court System Costs

After the winter weather ended our work week early last Friday, the General Assembly got right back to work with the start of week three. Committee meetings are now in full swing and senators are preparing legislation to bring before the Senate.

This week we completed legislative day 12, which means there are only 28 legislative days left until Sine Die on March 24. We hosted numerous guests this week, including Kristian Bush from the band Sugarland, as well as Nathan Bradley, a Georgia State Trooper who went above and beyond his call of duty last Halloween.

This week we were joined by U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson and a delegation from the Georgia National Guard in celebration of National Guard Day on Monday. Both Sen. Isakson and Adjutant General Joe Jarrard of the Georgia National Guard reminded us of the important role Georgia serves in protecting our nation. Some of you know that my son, Will, participates in the University of North Georgia’s Corps of Cadets program, and I could not be more proud. Programs such as these serve a vital role in preparing our future leaders.

The State of the Judiciary Address was given by Chief Justice Hugh Thompson of the Georgia Supreme Court this past Wednesday. Chief Justice Thompson spoke of the need for Georgia courts to encourage arbitration rather than lengthy litigation or expensive court battles, as well as utilize new technology to streamline the legal process. As we move further into the 21st century, it is imperative for us to find ways to cut costs within our court system, without hindering the legal process. This way, we improve the efficiency of our legal system, while also saving taxpayers millions of dollars.
