Bascomb Elementary Earns Digital Citizenship Recognition

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA — Bascomb Elementary School has earned national recognition for its digital citizenship program.

The school has achieved Common Sense School certification, which is awarded by the national nonprofit organization Common Sense. The award honors schools that have shown commitment to educating students to think critically and use technology responsibly, while also preparing them for the challenges of using technology, including privacy issues, cyberbullying and plagiarism.

Principal Carolyn Daugherty praised media specialist Pam Morris and technology lab teacher Jana Cervone for their work to provide students with excellent digital citizenship instruction, which led to this recognition.

“We’re honored to be recognized as a Common Sense School,” she said. “By preparing our students to use technology safely and responsibly, we are providing them an opportunity to build lifelong habits to help them succeed in a tech-driven world.”

Bascomb Elementary uses Common Sense Education’s research-based resources to teach students digital citizenship skills including internet safety and managing online relationships, protecting online reputations and personal privacy and media literacy and balance.

“We applaud the faculty and staff of Bascomb Elementary for embracing digital citizenship as an important part of their students’ education,” said Kelly Mendoza, vice president of education programs at Common Sense Education. “They deserve high praise for giving students the foundational skills they need to compete and succeed in the 21st-century workplace and participate ethically in society at large.”
