Woodstock attorney Channing Ruskell has announced plans to run for the Cherokee County Superior Court judge seat held by David Cannon Jr.

Cannon will face re-election to a second term in 2016.

Ruskell and Cannon have faced off several times in the previous elections while Cannon served as Cherokee County solicitor general.

Ruskell challenged Cannon “several times” for the seat, the attorney said in his press release.

Ruskell lost those bids to unseat Cannon, but added he believes “he can win against him for Superior Court judge, as he believes the citizens of Cherokee County as well as attorneys are ready for a change.”

Ruskell, who said he plans to make “judging his priority,” said he will expedite cases by unclogging court calendars. This process, he added, will allow both victims and defendants have their cases heard “without unnecessary delay because of judicial conflicts.”

“Mr. Ruskell believes there is nothing more important than handling cases in a fair and expeditious manner and feels he is the candidate with the legal and organizational skills who can achieve this goal,” he said in a statement.

Along with running for the office of solicitor general, Ruskell in 2012 also ran for the Cherokee County Commission District 2 seat in 2012.

Ruskell is a partner with the Carson & Ruskell Attorneys law firm in downtown Woodstock.

He’s also the attorney representing Carolyn Cosby and Bill McNiff, who filed a lawsuit to prevent the Resource Recovery Development Authority and Cherokee County Commission from approving a deal with Cowart Mulch Products to take over operations at the facility.

Cannon in May dismissed the suit, but court records show the defendants have appealed Cannon’s decision.
