Guns and Hoses allows the Cherokee Sheriff's Office and Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services to solicit participants to sign up for the race.
When participants register, they choose to run for the "guns," the sheriff's office, or "hoses," the fire department. A portion of registration fees were donated to an organization chosen by both public safety agencies.

According to a CRPA representative, the fire department had 384 runners show up to represent that agency while the sheriff's office had 309 participants.
The fire department donated their winnings -- $3,840 -- to the Goshen Valley Boys Ranch. The purpose Goshen Valley Boys Ranch, based in northwest Cherokee County, is to provide hope and a family-model home for boys who do not have either.
