Cherokee Voters Head To The Polls For May 22 Primary Elections

Voters across the county will elect a new county commission chairman, solicitor general, school board member and Superior Court judge.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA -- Tuesday is Election Day in Cherokee County, and voters will head to the polls today to elect a new County Commission chairman, solicitor general, school board member and Superior Court judge.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 22 for registered voters to cast ballots in local, state and federal races that are on the ballot for the 2018 primary elections.

Republicans Harry Johnston and Stanley Townsend are running to become the next Cherokee County Commission chairman. District 1 Commissioner Steve West will face no opposition while the District 4 seat will be a May 22 Republican contest between Steve Divine and Corey Ragsdale, as incumbent Scott Gordon is not running for re-election.

For the Cherokee County School Board, Clark Menard of District 5 and John Harmon of District 3 will face no opposition. The District 4 seat held by incumbent Republican Rick Steiner will be contested by longtime PTA advocate Donna Kosicki, a Republican, while the District 6 post held by incumbent Republican Mike Chapman will not be contested.

Cherokee County State Court Judge Alan Jordan faces no opposition in his re-election bid, and Republicans Todd Hayes and Sarah Hobson are hoping to replace retiring Solicitor General of Cherokee County Jessica Moss.

Cherokee County Juvenile Court Judge Tony Baker is seeking the Superior Court seat being vacated by retiring Judge Jackson Harris for the Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit. He is challenged by Canton attorney Benson Chambers.

At the state level and federal levels, incumbent state representatives and senators and U.S. Rep. Barry Loudermilk of the 6th Congressional District face no primary challengers, but they will face Democratic contenders in the Nov. 6 general election.

Please note that if you are assigned to the Free Home precinct, you will cast your ballot at Calvary Baptist Church at 137 Hightower Road in Ball Ground. Voters affected by this change should have been mailed a new precinct card showing the new polling location. For questions, call the Cherokee County Elections Office at 770-479-0407.
