Highway 92 To Close For Railroad Crossing Repairs

The railroad crossing in Woodstock, which is on Highway 92 just east of Main Street, will be closed to traffic June 16-19.

WOODSTOCK, GA -- The city and motorists alike are bracing for what's sure to be a major traffic headache in Woodstock next month, as the railroad crossing along Highway 92 just east of Main Street will close an entire weekend.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said the closure will run from 11 p.m. Friday, June 16 to 5 a.m. Monday, June 19 to accommodate work by the railroad company to repair the crossing at the location.

Traffic will be detoured off the highway during the aforementioned hours. Readers should note the railroad crossing repair operation and the road closure required are weather permitting. In case of inclement weather, this operation will be rescheduled for the weekend beginning June 23.

So, how will you get around this closure?

  • For drivers traveling eastbound on Highway 92, turn right onto Main Street (known as Canton Highway) and travel south until you reach the intersection of Piedmont Road in East Cobb. Turn left on Piedmont Road and make another left onto Sandy Plains Road, which will take you back to Highway 92.
  • If you're traveling westbound (towards I-575), turn right onto Trickum Road, left on Arnold Mill and continue onto Towne Lake Parkway. You will then turn left to enter the southbound entrance ramp on I-575 where you can access the S.R 92 Exit.

The Georgia DOT urges motorists in Cherokee County to follow the detour route and to also be mindful of the message boards at the closing points on S.R. 92 and signs along the detour route.

“We certainly hope that all motorists watch out for these detour signs and be extra cautious while approaching this work zone,” said DeWayne Comer, district engineer at the Georgia DOT office in Cartersville. “We understand that the closure of Highway 92 for a whole weekend may cause some inconvenience and delays, but it is necessary for railroad company to repair the crossing as quickly as possible and give the roadway back to local traffic and the traveling public."

Georgia DOT spokesperson Mohamed Arafa stressed that the project is being conducted by Patriot Railroad, not the state. If it were a GDOT initiative, it would also do the work on a continuous basis in order to complete it as soon as possible and "constrict traffic in the area as little as possible."

"By allowing the railroad company to continuously work during one weekend, we hope to limit the repair operation to just that and avoid closing the highway at night for a much longer duration," he added.
