Inmate Dies After Being Found Unresponsive At Jail

BREAKING: The Woodstock resident, who was booked into the Cherokee County Jail Wednesday night, was pronounced dead at the hospital.

CANTON, GA — An inmate was pronounced dead Thursday after he was found unresponsive at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center, and an investigation is underway to determine the man's cause of death. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office said Brice Laurence Turner, 33, of Woodstock was pronounced dead at Northside Hospital Cherokee.

Turner was booked into the facility at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, July 11 after he was arrested on charges by the Woodstock Police Department.

After jailers found Turner unresponsive in his cell, he was transported by ambulance to the hospital at 1:04 a.m. July 12 after "deputies and medical staff administered lifesaving efforts and it was determined his health was declining," Cherokee Sheriff's Office spokesperson Sgt. Marianne Kelley.

Turner had been charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of marijuana less than an ounce, improper lane change and crossing guard lines with drugs. No other inmates were in his cell during his time at the Adult Detention Center, Sgt. Kelley added.

His body will be transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab to determine a cause of death. As with any in-custody death, the GBI will investigate the incident, the sheriff's office said. Return to Patch for updates.
