UPDATE: Inmate Dies in Cherokee County Jail
Demetrie Jones, 32, had been in custody since Dec. 10 on a probation violation charge.

UPDATE at 1 p.m. Dec. 15: An autopsy performed Monday morning on Demetrie Jones, 32, shows the inmate “most likely died from complications of his medical condition, Cherokee Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lt. Jay Baker said.
“A definitive cause of death will not be made until lab results are complete, which will be in approximately 30 days,” Baker said.

An autopsy will be performed today on an inmate who passed away Saturday while in custody at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center.
Cherokee Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Lt. Jay Baker said Demetrie Jones, 32, of Ellenwood, died over the weekend.

Jones had been in custody since Dec. 10 when he was booked into the facility on a probation violation charge.
Baker said Jones had “multiple medical conditions, which required him to be in isolation, was under the care of the jail medical unit.”
The GBI is investigating the incident, and the autopsy is scheduled for 10 a.m. Dec. 15.
