New Route For Woodstock Christmas Parade?

The Woodstock City Council on Monday will continue discussing changing the route for the annual parade in December.

With the construction of a new Sam’s Club at the corner of Highway 92 and Main Street set to start sometime in the fall, the city of Woodstock is considering changing the route of its Christmas Parade of Lights.

The parade, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 6, typically starts at the old Walmart parking lot and ventures north along Main Street, veers left onto Rope Mill Road and ends at Woodstock Elementary School.

This year, city staff is considering having the parade start in the parking lot behind Woodstock Aquatic Center. The parade route would then travel west along Arnold Mill Road and Towne Lake Parkway, turn left onto Mill Street, right onto Market Street, left onto Dupree Road, left onto Main Street and end at the Park at City Center.

Parks and Recreation Director Preston Pooser told the Woodstock City Council during its meeting on Sept. 8 that this option would add more viewing options for residents and would have minimal impact on businesses.

However, the route would be slightly longer — 1.3 miles as opposed to the current 1.1 mile-route.

The council will continue discussing the proposed change during its meeting on Monday, Sept. 22, which starts at 7 p.m. at the Chambers at City Center.
