Proposed Extended Stay Hotel Draws Opposition From Residents

The proposal calls for constructing a four-story hotel along Highway 92 at Sharon Way in Woodstock.

WOODSTOCK, GA -- A petition is circulating among residents opposed to a plan to construct an extended stay hotel along Highway 92 in Woodstock.

The petition, which can be viewed here, is calling on residents to express their concerns about the proposal. As of Friday afternoon, 152 supporters have signed their names on the document.

REO Funding Solutions, LLC is petitioning the city for a conditional use permit and variances to operate a hotel on 2.57 acres along the north side of Highway 92 west of Sharon Way, which is east of Dixie Speedway.

According to a site plan, the four-story hotel would be 48,391 square feet.

The variance requests submitted by the applicant relate to reducing buffer and landscaping requirements; allowing the building height to a maximum of 48 feet; reducing the minimum square in the common area lobby from 1,000 to 532 square feet (with over 1,200 square feet of additional connecting common entrance space); and reducing the minimum percentage brick requirements on three sides from 80 percent to an overall four-sided 65.5 percent.

The petition cites the development would not only negatively impact property values, but would also bring an increase in crime, drugs and prostitution to the area.

"The safe and comfortable community you are so used to will be under attack soon" by the development if it is approved, the petition notes.

According to city documents, the applicant notes the development would be a "state of the art, but economical hotel option for local residents and travelers who require accommodations generally for an extended period of time."

The case will be heard by the Woodstock Planning Commission at its July 7 meeting and by the Woodstock City Council at its July 25 meeting.
