School Police Investigating Rumored Social Media Threat

Sequoyah High School officials are investigating the rumor involving a photo of a gun with a message saying, "The end is near."

HICKORY FLAT, GA -- Sequoyah High School officials are investigating rumors of a photo containing a firearm and a peculiar message posted to a social media networking site.

The photo included a gun with the message, "The end is near," but no other details, the Cherokee County School District Police Department said on its Facebook page.

The agency posted the notice of the investigation midday Friday on behalf of Superintendent Dr. Brian Hightower. It's unclear which social media site the alleged photo was uploaded to.

Compounding the situation, a parent acting on information received from her child called 911 Friday morning and "made an erroneous report of an emergency," the agency added.

"As a result, multiple law enforcement agencies arrived at the school, but after quickly assessing the situation, determined there was no emergency or threat," the school police department said.

"The Cherokee County School District takes the safety and security of students very seriously," CCSD added. "Students and their parents are reminded that making terroristic threats is a crime for which there are consequences."
