Crews with Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to the call of the retaining wall collapse around 7:30 a.m. Friday. The collapse, said Captain Chad Davis, took out a hole that was roughly 35 feet high and 150 feet wide

Holly Springs City Manager Rob Logan said city staff were also dispatched to the site Friday morning and reported the finding.

The collapse, he said, “left the building without electricity.”

“Engineers representing Home Depot will be assessing the damage over the weekend to ensure that the building is safe for occupancy and will initiate repairs as soon as possible,” he added.

A backup generator for the Home Depot was in the location of the retaining wall collapse, which was responsible for the natural gas leak that occurred during the incident, Logan stated.

The city manager stated an official cause of the “failure” has not occurred, but noted there had been a water leak of the area of the collapse in December.

Holmes stated there’s no ETA on when the store will reopen. Please return to Patch for updates.
