Student Stabbed at Woodstock High School; Teen Suspect In Custody

The student was stabbed in the neck, and the Cherokee Sheriff's Office says he was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

WOODSTOCK, GA — One student has been taken into custody following the alleged stabbing of another pupil Friday afternoon at Woodstock High School.

Cherokee Sheriff's Office spokesperson Lt. Jay Baker said the agency is investigating the incident, which prompted the Cherokee County School District to implement a Code Red alert for both Woodstock Middle and High schools following the incident.

Baker said at about 1 p.m., the suspect attacked the victim with a sharp object in one of the bathrooms at the school. Both the suspect and victim are 16. However, Baker added the suspect is a sophomore and the victim is enrolled as a freshman.

Sheriff's deputies, along with the Cherokee County Schools Police Department and Woodstock Police Department, arrived on the scene to investigate the incident. Officers worked with school administrators to obtain surveillance footage and determined the suspect left the school following the alleged attack.

Deputies were able to locate the teen at his home and take him in to custody, Baker added.

Sheriff's office detectives are now in charge of the investigation, and are in the process of searching the school and the teenager's home to uncover a motive and other evidence in connection to the case.

For its part, the Cherokee County School District informed parents that the student was injured with a "sharp object." System spokesperson Barbara Jacoby said the student's injuries are non-life threatening. Baker noted the student was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital for treatment.

"All doors are locked and no one is allowed in or out of the building," the system added in its message to parents. "Parents will not be permitted to pick up students until the Code Red is lifted. We understand that this is a stressful message, but please know that the safety and security of all students is our priority."

No motive has been released in connection to the incident. Woodstock High School said on its Facebook page that it will proceed with regular dismissal for students. However, all after school activities have been cancelled for Friday, May 12.
