The New Works Festival will be a juried show consisting of 10-minute works selected from plays written by local high school students, as well as a longer one act written by professional playwrights.
In order to help students get in touch with their inner Shakespeare, Elm Street will offer a playwriting class led by Nicole Adkins in early 2016.

“We’re excited to have Nicole to lead this class,” said Elm Street Operations Manager Christopher Brazelton. “She is a published playwright and is accomplished at teaching those skills to others. In addition to Nicole, some of our directors will be available to work with the students as they shape their works.”
Works can be submitted on the Elm Street website between Jan. 28 and March 15. Nominees for the festival will be selected in April. The plays selected for presentation in the festival will be announced in April and the final candidates will have their play read at the New Works Festival in June.
Following the festival, the author of the winning entry will get $500 honorarium and will have their play presented as a curtain show prior to one of Elm Street’s Main Stage Productions in the 16-17 season.
“This is such a great chance for young writers to grow in their skills and to share their talent with our community,” said Siobhan Brumbelow, Elm Street’s education manager. “We hope that many people will take advantage of this opportunity.”
