Woodstock, GA -- The Woodstock City Council on Monday approved a conditional use permit that would allow a major automotive repair operation to move into the former home of Reliable Heating & Air.

The Council voted 5-1, with Council member David Potts opposing, to approve a conditional use permit request from Peek Commercial Properties to operate its business on 2.18 acres at 11075 Highway 92.

The applicant has stated he’d like to use the existing building for a collision center and self-storage business.

The request originally came before the City Council at its Dec. 14 meeting, but was tabled until the Jan. 11 meeting at the applicant’s request.

The City Council met in executive session to discuss real estate for roughly 20 minutes before casting its vote on the issue.

After returning to open session, Parks Huff, attorney for the applicant, argued that there was nothing in the city’s code that would prevent the operation, as the building was constructed in compliance with the Highway 92 overlay.

He also said the application was recommended for approval by the Woodstock Planning Commission at its Dec. 3 meeting. Huff also produced documents to show the applicant had over 100 signatures in support of the proposal.

When it’s up and running, the business would have a $2 million payroll, Huff stated.

According to city documents, Steve Peek also plans to erect an privacy fence with a gate that would enclose part of the parking lot.

This structure would allow for wrecked cars to be stored outside without motorists and residents seeing those vehicles from Highway 92.

The self-storage facility, which would not be used for cars, would also be located inside the existing, two-story facility, as the applicant said the facility is large enough to accommodate both uses, city documents show.

Peek told the City Council that he plans to have the property look better than the surrounding competition, which he said could force them to “step up their game.”

Reliable Heating & Air relocated in late 2015 to their new offices at 1305 Chastain Road in Kennesaw.

In other business, Council members David Potts of Ward 2, Tracy Collins of Ward 4 and Rob Usher of Ward 6 were all sworn into office at the start of the meeting.
