Woodstock Approves Senior Center Expansion
The 2,400-square-foot addition will allow the center to keep up with its growth in membership.

WOODSTOCK, GA -- Woodstock's Long Senior Center will soon see the start of a project designed to keep up with the growth in popularity of its services.
The City Council at its Jan. 23 meeting awarded bid to Astra Construction Services, LLC to expand the senior center on Arnold Mill Road for $371,983.66.
Woodstock will utilize Community Development Block Grant funding for the initiative, so city staff members will work closely with Cherokee County on finalizing the authorization.

Once that's hammered out, the city could begin construction and the work is expected to take about six months complete, said Woodstock Parks and Recreation Director Preston Pooser.
The 2,400-square-foot expansion will be added to the front of the existing building. Its exterior will be similar to that of Fire Station No. 14, which is located next door, Pooser added.

The multi-purpose room will allow the city to host arts and crafts, card games, lunches and other events. Of course, the new addition will include restrooms for patrons. Woodstock's Long Senior Center has about 700 members, which is up from roughly 120 members in 2016.
"We’re just trying to keep ahead of that growth," the parks director said.
It's not the first time Woodstock has used CDBG funding for the facility. In the past, that money was used to purchase the ADA-compliant bus and to make parking lot improvements, Pooser told Patch.
If all goes to plan, the project could be completed by early July.
"We are looking forward to the addition," Pooser stated.
