Woodstock Police To Participate In Funeral Procession For Fallen Marine

The Woodstock Police Department on Sunday will take part in the funeral procession of the Georgia military serviceman killed last week in a shooting in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The funeral for Lance Cpl. Skip Wells will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 26 at First Baptist Church of Woodstock. Executive Pastor Dr. Jim Law will be officiating. Wells was among four Marines who were gunned down during last week’s shooting rampage at the U.S. Naval Recruiting Station.
As the service is anticipated to have a large crowd of family, friends, and supporters in attendance, the Woodstock Police Department will implement the following primary traffic control plan:

- At approximately 1:30 p.m., Woodstock police will join other law enforcement agencies as the funeral escort exits Interstate 575 northbound at Exit 7 onto Highway 92.
- At this time, all intersections along Highway 92 leading to the church, located at 11905 Highway 92, will close down to motorists and an officer will be present at each intersection. All intersections along Highway 92 will open shortly thereafter.
- Upon conclusion of the service, which is expected at around 3 p.m., Woodstock police and other law enforcement agencies will lead the funeral procession to the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton.
- As such, intersections along Highway 92 leading to the on-ramp of I-575 northbound will shut down until the procession passes through.
The Woodstock Police Department will also assist with interior and exterior security during the service at First Baptist Church of Woodstock.
Authorities are also reminding residents to drive with caution around pedestrians, comply with uniformed police officers directing traffic and to allow for extra travel time between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. as congestion in this area is expected to be high.
“On behalf of Chief Cal Moss and the women and men of the Woodstock Police Department, our deepest condolences are extended to the family and friends of Lance Corporal Skip Wells and we thank him for his service to our country,” the agency said in a statement.
