Today's riddle: Why do fish live in salt water? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. HPD arrests suspect, seizes 11 gambling machines and $9K in cash (staradvertiser.com) — Honolulu police shut down an illegal game room in Kapolei, arresting a 49-year-old woman and seizing 11 gambling machines plus more than $9,000 in cash. The bust, coming less than two weeks after a similar Ewa Beach raid, underscores HPD's push against illegal gambling and includes a 24-hour hotline and online form for residents to report suspicious operations.
2. Weekend shuttles ready for Made in Hawaii Festival (khon2.com subscription) — Honolulu shoppers heading to the Made in Hawaii Festival this weekend can skip convention center parking headaches by using new priority shuttles from Kaimuki High School and UH Mānoa. For $6 round-trip, riders get air-conditioned buses and expedited festival entry, with passes available online or at kiosks on both shuttle lots.
3. Have a backyard? Here's what you're not allowed to have in it (khon2.com) — Honolulu homeowners are reminded that backyard "freedom" still has firm limits, from bans on roosters in residential zones to strict rules on livestock numbers and coop placement. The piece walks through key Honolulu Land Use Ordinance provisions and state agriculture regulations so Oʻahu residents don't accidentally violate animal or structure rules at home.
4. Oahu man pleads guilty to threatening to kill Michigan Governor (kitv.com) — A Honolulu man has pleaded guilty in federal court to emailing and calling in violent threats to kill Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, saying he researched how to travel there to carry them out. Investigators tracked him down in Kailua, and with prior federal threat convictions on his record, he now faces up to five years in prison and a substantial fine.
5. Former 'Bow Andre Ilagan to play in US Open (hawaiinewsnow.com) — Honolulu readers have a hometown tennis story to cheer: former University of Hawaii standout and Farrington grad Andre Ilagan has earned a wild card into the US Open qualifying draw, reaching his highest-ever world ranking. After early struggles on the pro tour, he's surged into consecutive finals and now hopes to represent Hawaii and its culture on one of tennis's biggest stages starting Aug. 23.
