📰 News we're reading

• Southern Idaho farmers turn to soil sensors to conserve water (localnews8.com) — Farmers in the Burley-based Mini-Cassia region are testing buried soil moisture sensors to fine-tune irrigation and cut water use during ongoing drought and tight water supplies. Early results show some growers had been overwatering and are now reducing sprinkler rotations, while keeping the sensors after the three‑year project ends.

• Looking Back: A hotel crash, a grave-digging attempt, and the Teton Dam collapses (eastidahonews.com) — A century ago in Burley, residents were so frustrated by nighttime flower thefts that local papers labeled the incidents “plain stealing” and urged protection for carefully tended yards. This historical roundup also recalls a hotel crash in Roberts, a grave disturbance near Heise, a stolen safe in Pocatello, and the devastating Teton Dam collapse that inundated Sugar City and Rexburg.
