📰 News we're reading
• Washington couple faces long recovery after anniversary trip ends in Highway 55 crash (kivitv.com) — A Washington couple was badly injured in a head‑on collision on Highway 55 just north of Cascade during an anniversary trip, leaving both with multiple fractures and long recoveries ahead. Idaho State Police say a northbound car crossed into southbound lanes, blocking the highway for several hours and highlighting ongoing concerns about unsafe passing on this busy route used daily by Cascade-area drivers.
• Idaho's big reading gains come with a caveat (dailyfly.com) — Cascade's elementary students posted one of the biggest reading gains in Idaho, jumping from 32% to 86% proficiency after the district overhauled staffing, instruction, and how it administers the new state reading test. Local leaders credit focused literacy work, standards-based grading, and small‑group testing with headphones, even as experts caution that statewide score jumps partly reflect adjustments to the redesigned assessment.
• 'Very disappointing:' Schools scramble after lawmakers spike behavioral health grants (UPDATED) (idahoednews.org) — Cascade's school district was among several rural Idaho districts that applied for new behavioral health hub grants, only to see lawmakers abruptly put the $1.2 million program on hold. That decision leaves Cascade and peers scrambling for other ways to support students' mental health, while some superintendents criticize the Legislature for favoring symbolic gestures over real access to care.
