Nearly 800 Layoffs, Closings At IL Walmart, Sears, Grocery Stores

More retail store closings in Illinois will impact hundreds of jobs.

ILLINOIS — Although the state's unemployment rate matched its record low of 4.1 percent in August, more retail store closings — including Walmart, Sears and grocery chain Shop ‘n Save — will result in the loss of nearly 800 jobs in November and December, according to the latest WARN notices. The jobs are included on the latest list posted under the Illinois Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act for September.

Seventy-five jobs will be affected by the closing of the Niles Sears store at 400 Golf Mill Center. A liquidation sale is under way at the location, which is expected to close by Dec. 16. According to a layoff notice submitted to Illinois Department of Commerce last week, none of the affected employees are members of a union.

The closing of a Walmart store in Pana, Illinois, will result in 86 layoffs, according to a posted notice. That store is expected to close by Nov. 23.
