Trump Administration Denies IL Disaster Aid Following August 2025 Storms
The ruling by FEMA applies to the state's request for individual assistance for residents in Boone, Cook, Kane, McHenry, and Will counties.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, under the direction of the Trump Administration, has denied the State of Illinois' appeal for a major disaster declaration. This denial follows severe storms, straight-line winds, and flooding that impacted multiple counties from Aug. 16–19, 2025.
In a letter dated Feb. 7, FEMA said that supplemental federal assistance under the Stafford Act is not warranted for this incident. This ruling specifically applies to the state’s request for Individual Assistance for residents in Boone, Cook, Kane, McHenry, and Will counties.
The denial means that federal individual assistance will not be made available to residents in the affected counties for recovery efforts related to these storms.

"Let's call this what this is: a politically motivated decision that punishes thousands of Illinois families in a critical moment of need," Gov. JB Pritzker said. "Playing politics with disaster relief funding is a new low, even for the Trump Administration."
The state’s appeal was submitted on Nov. 21, 2025. This submission followed several months of coordination among local, state, and federal officials. These efforts included joint Preliminary Damage Assessments and a supplemental round of assessments conducted in early November 2025.

These assessments aimed to capture the full scope of the damage. The August 16–19 storm system caused substantial flooding, significant property damage, widespread power outages, and blocked roadways. These conditions affected homeowners and businesses across Northern Illinois.
"Ignoring the realities of widespread damage from the August 2025 severe storms, speaks volumes about the federal government's vindictive priorities and complete disregard for American livelihoods," Pritzker said.
