1 In Custody After 9-Hour Standoff At Algonquin Hotel
The standoff at the Holiday Inn Express led to nearby Jacobs High School issuing a shelter in place Wednesday afternoon.
ALGONQUIN, IL — A 37-year-old Chicago man is in custody following a nine-hour standoff at a Holiday Inn Express in Algonquin Wednesday, which led school officials at nearby Jacobs High School to enact a shelter in place.
Authorities took LaBurron Jackson into custody at 8:12 p.m. on a warrant for a parole violation on a sexual exploitation of a minor charge, according to a news release from the Algonquin Police Department. Police were initially called to the Holiday Inn Express, 2595 Bunker Hills Drive, just before 11 a.m. due to a report of a suspicious activity happening at the hotel.
During an investigation, authorities learned Jackson, who was staying at the hotel, was wanted on the warrant. Jackson did not answer the door to his hotel room, and told officers he would resist attempts they made to take him into custody, according to a news release.

At the time, police did not know if Jackson had a weapon or was armed, and the McHenry County Sheriff's Office SWAT and Hostage Negotiation Team responded to help with tactical operations and negotiations.
After repeated attempts to get Jackson to leave the room, the SWAT team deployed a pepper spray aerosol into the room, according to police. Police notified Community Unit School District 300 about the incident and Jacobs High School was put on a precautionary lockdown.

Students were dismissed at their normal time on Wednesday afternoon, Anthony McGinn, spokesman for Algonquin-based Community Unit District 300, told the Daily Herald.
"At no time during this incident was the safety of the students’ in jeopardy," according to police.
Jackson received medical attention since he was exposed to a chemical irritant from the pepper spray. No one else was injured, authorities said.
Additional charges against Jackson are pending, police said.
