“Algonquin’s strong and prosperous leadership in the forestry field continues to thrive and provides an exemplary model for other communities,” said Village President Schmitt. “Steve’s advanced leadership with the Illinois Arborist Association as well as his unremitting devotion of service to the Village for over 18 years, demonstrates the commitment and passion of the Public Works Department that serves our community.”

Algonquin has regularly been recognized as a leader in forestry management practices. The Village has been named a Tree City USA for 18 consecutive years, since 1996, by the Arbor Day Foundation. Additionally, Algonquin has been invited to speak to other jurisdictions statewide, including the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, the Illinois City/Council Management Association, and the Intergovernmental Risk Management Agency, to discuss the Village’s efforts relative to a myriad of tree related issues.

The General Services Division employs eight International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborists, and maintains approximately 21,000 public parkway trees and over 150 acres of developed park space in Algonquin.

The Illinois Arborist Association is a non-profit organization that educates its members in proper tree care, supports research on trees, and promotes professionalism in the arboriculture industry.
