Red Light Cameras in Algonquin to Go Dark in April

Village officials said there has been a dramatic decrease in violations at red light intersections since the cameras were installed in 2009.

The Algonquin Village Board voted Tuesday to remove red-light cameras from intersections in the village, according to the Northwest Herald. The change will take effect on April 30 when cameras will not longer be in place at the intersections of Randall and Algonquin roads and the intersection of Randall Road and Bunker Hill Drive/Huntington Drive.

Schloneger said the village has seen a significant drop in violations at red-light intersections since the cameras were installed in 2009. In the first year, there were 6,937 violations, according to an earlier article on the Northwest Herald. In 2015, there were 1,766 violations.

In addition, there was an immediate drop in crashes at intersections with red light cameras and that number has remained consistent since, according to the article.

“It was never intended to be something in place permanently,” Village Manager Tim Schloneger told the Daily Herald. “It was always a public safety program to create awareness and change behavior. As soon as we accomplished that goal, it was time to remove them.”
