Baby Bear Cub's Death at Goebbert's Farm Sparks Public Outrage
People upset over the bear's death are calling for a boycott of the farm and are asking Goebbert's to remove exotic animals from the farm.
A bear cub died over the weekend at Goebbert’s Farm in South Barrington.
The cause of the bear’s death has not yet been determined. A veterinarian completed a necropsy and did not detect any liver, brain or heart issues and toxicology reports will be run to look for any other underlying health problems, according to the Daily Herald.
The bear cub was found in distress in its cage on Saturday at the popular fall festival, which is located at 40 W. Higgins Road, according to the article. The bear cub was part of Goebbert’s animal exhibit that included 50 farm and exotic animals, the Chicago Tribune reports.
The death has prompted some to call for a boycott of Goebbert’s. Others have called on Goebbert’s to remove the exotic animals that they say have no place at a pumpkin farm.
“Why does Goebberts and others find it necessary to have exotics and those poor ponies as part of their fall entertainment,” wrote one woman on the Geobbert’s Facebook page. “Fall is about pumpkin, apple picking and hayrides. Leave it at that and don’t be so greedy by endangering animals that don’t belong there. So sad and shame on you.”
Goebbert’s posted the following statement on their Facebook page Wednesday:
The animal exhibit at Goebbert’s is operated by Timbavati Wildlife Park, which is based in Wisconsin Dells, Wis., according to the Chicago Tribune. Goebbert’s staff is expected to gather when the fall festival closes for the season and discuss any possible changes for next year.
