Fox River Recedes But More Rain Expected / Readers Share Flood Photos

Clean-up efforts are underway to the estimated 800 buildings affected by flooding but officials say we may not be out of the woods, yet.

MCHENRY COUNTY, IL - The Fox River in Algonquin has officially crested, weather officials say, but with more rain in the forecast in coming days, towns along the river may not be out of the woods quite yet. Around 800 buildings in McHenry County, most of them located along the brimming shores of the Fox River or Chain O' Lakes, are underwater due to flooding, authorities told the Daily Herald on Wednesday morning. The Fox River in Algonquin crested at 12.37 feet, according to NBC Chicago, which is below the town's record level set during flooding in 2013 when the river reached 12.7 feet.

With clean-up efforts underway for many left with basements underwater and homes surrounded by the overflowing Fox River, the good news is the river is expected to slowly recede, reaching 12.2 feet by Thursday morning. The bad news is that more rain is in the forecast for the coming days, including tonight.

"We're at the mercy of Mother Nature," Village President John Schmitt told the Daily Herald.
