Library Celebrates National Library Week

April 12-14 at the Library will feature a variety of programs, events, and community outreach efforts for all ages.

With the theme Unlimited Possibilities at Your Library, the Algonquin Area Public Library District (AAPLD) is celebrating National Library Week with exciting programs and events for all ages. Highlights include a free family movie night, a presentation about heirloom gardening, a super Saturday spring celebration, and a month-long comic/graphic novel trivia competition on www.facebook.com/aapld, which builds up to the Library’s Free Comic Book Day and Mini Comic Con on May 2!

National Library Week kicked off in 1958 as a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April to celebrate what libraries and librarians bring to their communities and promote library use and support. It’s a great week to stop in and learn more about the Library—such as our no-fine policy for overdue books, how to get a Library card (it’s easy!), and free programs like our one-on-one technology tutorials. Or visit aapld.org/events 24 hours a day, seven days a week to use your Library at home!

The atmosphere gets a little casual at both Library locations on April 14 and 15, when staff who donate $5 a day get the privilege of wearing jeans to work. All funds will be donated to the Senior Care Volunteer Network of McHenry County, which works with community seniors who live at home to help them maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life. The Harnish Main Library is proud to host an information table for the Senior Care Volunteer Network throughout April. Stop by and learn more about this outstanding organization that provides free services to local seniors and priceless volunteer opportunities.

Finally, the Library invites residents, community leaders, and local business owners to help us build our new People’s Library collection featuring YOUR stories. We’re collecting books about individuals, family members, neighborhoods, special events, school histories, or anything else important to you. Stop by the Adult Services desk and pick up a FREE re-purposed 10-page book. Then tell your story using photos, drawings, scrapbook techniques, poems, journal entries, narrative: anything goes! Authors age 14 and older, please. Parents can make it a family project with help from the kids. Complete your book and return it to either Library location for cataloging by 5pm on Sunday, April 26 and you will be entered in a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card. Questions? Contact Virginia Freyre at 847-458-3144 or vfreyre@aapld.org, or stop by the Adult Services desk next time you’re at the Harnish Main Library.
