LITH May Get A New Hindu Temple

The planning and zoning commission approved the project, now it's up to the village board.

LAKE IN THE HILLS, IL — A proposal for a Hindu temple in Lake in the Hills will be considered next week by village officials, according to reports. If approved, the home for the new temple will be 1300 Cunat Ct. in the old church building.

The project was approved by the planning and zoning commission in November, according to the Daily Herald. The organization applying for a conditional religious use is Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha Midwest Inc., or BAPS, a Hindu denomination.

The Herald reported BAPS is a volunteer-driven nonprofit and strives to uphold humanitarian services and spiritual values.

Manoj Patel, owner of Cunat Ct LLC, said the group plans to take over the existing structure and use it for religious purposes. "We've been doing (assemblies) for the last 15 years in Crystal Lake," he said, according to the Herald. "We are finding a permanent spot."

Fred Mullard, interim community development director, said there are no current plans to make any physical changes to the property.

The temple won't be anything near as lavish as the BAPS temple in Bartlett, which was reported to have cost about $30 million to build and includes immensely ornate marble work and spans 170,000 square feet.

The Herald reported that the new Lake in the Hills temple would be used from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturdays and from 6 to 8 p.m. from Sundays to Fridays.

The village board will vote on the proposal on Dec. 14.
