The Tribune named Roskam, who is in his sixth term as the district's representative, the unofficial GOP nominee after he nabbed 69.9 percent of the vote with 234 of 618 district precincts reporting in. His challenger, Glen Ellyn transplant surgeon Gordon "Jay" Kinzler, only had 30.1 percent of the vote.

In all likelihood, Roskam will face Howland, a College of Lake County trustee, in the Nov. 8 general election to see who will capture the 6th District seat. With 234 of the 618 precincts reporting in, Howland was leading her challenger, physician Robert Marshall, by 67.2 percent of the votes to 32.8.

ORIGINAL STORY

Before they cast ballots in November's general election, voters for Illinois' 6th Congressional District will have to decide Tuesday who will be the Republican and Democratic candidates.

Rep. Peter Roskam is the GOP incumbent in his sixth term and has held the seat since 2006. He faces Gordon "Jay" Kinzler, a Glen Ellyn transplant surgeon and lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve, in the primary for his party's nomination.

Throughout his campaign, Kinzler has questioned the strength of Roskam's conservatism, according to the Northwest Herald. Kinzler and Roskam—who is a subcommittee chairman for the House Ways and Means Committee—do agree that President Barack Obama's Affordable Care Act needs to be dismantled.

Both candidates were on social media Tuesday making a final push for votes.

For the Democrats, lawyer and College of Lake County trustee Amanda Howland takes on Robert Marshall, a doctor. Howland has taken a fiscal approach with her platform, saying she would try to close loopholes in the tax code and have the U.S. Congress do more to promote job growth, according to the Northwest Herald.

Her Democratic opponent has taken a different tact while campaigning. Marshall has said he would try to create hundreds of new jobs by moving the nation's capitol from Washington, D.C., to central Illinois, the Northwest Herald reports.

The 6th Congressional District represents areas of Cook, DuPuage, Kane, Lake and McHenry counties, including counties such as Downers Grove, Algonquin, Barrington, Palatine and Glen Ellyn.

Illinois is an open-primary state, which means voters don't have to be registered with a party to participate. Polling places will be open until 7 p.m., and voters in line by that time can cast a ballot. Go to the website for the Illinois State Board of Elections for more information.
