Major Flooding In Forecast For Fox River In Algonquin

Village officials are encouraging residents living in flood-prone areas to prepare.

A flood warning has been issued for the Fox River in Algonquin with river levels expected to continue to rise through the weekend. Village officials on Wednesday encouraged residents on the floodplain to prepare. The river, which has a flood stage of 9.5 feet, was measuring at 10 feet as of 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

At this level, minor flooding is occurring. The river is expected to crest at 13.5 feet on Sunday and "major flooding is in the forecast," according to the National Weather Service.

The flooding has the potential to cause property damage and "sandbagging is encouraged," according to a news release from the village of Algonquin. The village is working to make sandbags available to residents in various location adjacent to flood plain areas.

The village is also encouraging residents living in flood-prone area to be prepared to evacuate their homes if necessary.

"At this time, the village does not see an immediate need to leave the area, but residents are encouraged to monitor the quickly changing conditions and to take appropriate actions, including possible relocation," according to the news release.
