Mosquito Population on the Rise in McHenry County
Communities are taking measures to counter the spike and limit the risk of West Nile virus.

McHenry County communities have been seeing an increase in mosquitoes, which has these areas looking at ways to control the insects, according to a Northwest Herald report.
Crystal Lake will be spraying the city Friday and Saturday nights, the report stated. Officials told the Northwest Herald that city-monitored traps found the amount of mosquitoes increased 12-fold over a week in the city.

This year’s greater-than-average rainfall and July’s hot and humid temperatures are being blamed for the mosquito population spike, the report stated. Despite this increase, though, McHenry County has yet to have any cases of mosquitoes carrying the West Nile Virus, the report added. The virus has been found in Kane and Lake counties this summer.
