Results Are In From Algonquin Community Survey

The village got high praise as a place to live and raise children and low marks for ease of car travel and value of services for taxes paid.

From the Village of Algonquin: At their meeting on January 16, the Algonquin Village Board reviewed the results from the 2017 Algonquin Community Survey. This is the sixth year the survey has been administered, asking residents for their input on quality of life factors in Algonquin as well as rating the quality and importance of municipal services.

Residents gave high praise to several categories including: Algonquin as a place to live (93.3% positive rating), Cleanliness of Algonquin (90.3% positive rating), and Algonquin as a place to raise children (90.0% positive rating).

The largest improvements since the inception of the survey in 2012 have been the following: Ease of car travel (18.1% improvement), Opportunities to participate in social events and activities (14.5% improvement), and Value of services for the taxes paid to the Village (12.9% improvement).

“Keeping Algonquin as a desirable place to live and for families to put down roots has always been a top priority for our Village Board” said Village President John Schmitt. “Seeing feedback that our residents value their quality of life and municipal services in relation to taxes paid is a very positive accomplishment. The Village has worked very hard to reduce our tax levy below 2008 levels and we are seeing a greater understanding that only six percent of your total property bill goes toward Village services.”

Some of the lower rated categories in this year’s survey include Traffic flow on major streets and Employment opportunities.

“While very positive results, we certainly have room for improvement” said Schmitt. “We will continue our focus on strategic priorities such as the Algonquin Corporate Campus to promote job growth and also regional transportation improvements, including the completion of Longmeadow Parkway and the Randall Road improvements starting this year.”

The Algonquin Community Survey provides resident input that is important in setting spending priorities for the Village’s annual capital and operating budget. The fiscal year 2018-2019 budget, which is currently being developed, is proposed to feature additional resources allocated to street maintenance/improvement and economic development.
