Winter Chill Arrives Early in Algonquin, Chicago Area

While the Chicago area has been spared the winter storms that have proven deadly in other parts of the Midwest, cold temperatures are arriving earlier than scheduled.

WGN’s Tom Skilling this week reported that temperatures this week are about 20 degrees lower than norms for this time of year, and the colder weather is arriving two weeks earlier than it has historically.

Since 1871, Nov. 29 is historically recognized as the average date when the Chicago area first sees a high temperature that fails to reach 30 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service, Crystal Lake and Algonquin will see a high near 29 on Thursday, with a low around 19 Thursday night. There is also a chance of snow on Thursday.

Temperatures will be much the same on Friday, according to the forecast. Saturday is expected to partly sunny with a high near 31 and snow likely at night with a low around 24.

The NWS calls for a chance of snow Sunday, with a high near 30.

The chill will continue for the next two weeks, Skilling predicted, with even colder temperatures next week.

Cooler temperatures will move in Monday, with a high near 26. Tuesday will see a high near 24, according to the NWS.
