Born Advocate Deb Folta Is A 'Positive Force' At Sertoma Centre

ALSIP, IL -- Deb Folta hasn’t let her visual impairment get in the way of her being a born advocate. Deb is a positive force in Sertoma Centre, the Alsip-based non-profit organization that empowers individuals with disabilities to achieve personal success.

She is active in the Sertoma United advocacy group, and another advocacy group Team Voice with Community Support Services. Deb had also been a member of other advocacy groups throughout the years.

At Sertoma Centre, Deb sits on the Intervention Review and Human Rights Committees to ensure that all consumer rights are being respected. She helps train new staff at the agency by participating in the Mission and Philosophy Training, part of new staff orientation.

Deb has served as a consultant to the Assistive Technology Committee when new products are going to be used for individuals with low to no vision. She works in the Developmental Training Program at Sertoma Centre and credits much of her success to her direct support professional, Patty Medina. Patty always helps Deb set up a job using tactile cues, which helps Deb be successful in completing a job.

You can find Deb participating in yoga classes at Sertoma. She also attends an art and drama class in the community. In her spare time, Deb enjoys listening to audio books and completing crossword puzzles. Deb is an inspiration and leader to many people and she shares her happiness with all those around her.
