Man Tased Outside Walmart Supercenter After Giving Cop Fat Lip: Court

Prosecutor said police used taser when he fought off arrest for suspected retail theft.

CRESTWOOD, IL -- An 18-year-old Robbins man tried to fight off arresting officers after fleeing with hundreds of dollars’ worth of electronics that he had taken from the Walmart, prosecutors said Thursday in court.

Shaymonte Mobley appeared before Cook County Judge Peter Felice on a charge of retail theft. He also has a pending disorderly conduct case.

The prosecutor said that Mobley was observed Dec. 7 by loss prevention agents at the Walmart Supercenter in Crestwood placing various electronics valued at $328 into a backpack. He fled when confronted outside the store.

Crestwood police officers soon caught up with Mobley after Walmart employees called 911. Officers said that Mobley ignored orders to stop.

Mobley pushed and punched a cop, giving him a fat lip. Police tased Mobley after he had scratched several officers' faces, the prosecutor said.

The assistant public defender told the judge that Mobley takes medications for various mental health issues. She asked the judge to consider electronic monitoring.

“It’s clear he has no respect for authority and he’s out of control,” Judge Felice said.

A public safety assessment flagged Mobley for violent behavior. Bail was set at $100,000. Mobley’s next court hearing is Dec. 28.
