Rail Crossing Remains Closed After Train Derailment In Blue Island

Crews work to clear the 136th crossing after a CSX freight train derailed Wednesday. CSX says no hazardous materials were involved.

BLUE ISLAND, IL — The 136th Street railroad crossing in Blue Island remained closed Thursday, as crews work on clearing the crossing, after a CSX freight train that derailed the night before.

The derailment happened just before 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, when 13 cars, possibly including one tanker car, ran off the tracks near Chatham and 136th Street, Blue Island police said in a statement. News reports said more than 15 cars were damaged in the 13600 block of Thornton Road, that parked in the street adjacent to the tracks.

Chief Geoffrey Farr, of the Blue Island Police Department, said the cars that tumbled from the tracks were empty box cars.

According to a statement from CSX, no hazardous materials involved.

“There were no injuries as a result of the incident and no leaks or spills. CSX appreciates the swift response of the local first responders. Safety is our top priority as we work to clear the crossings impacted by the incident and fully restore the area. The cause of the incident is under investigation.”
