Some Lanes Re-Open After Fatal Crash on I-294 Near Alsip-Worth

One person is dead, three injured after a fiery crash Monday morning in northbound lanes of I-294 causing major delays, police say.

ALSIP-WORTH, IL -- Police are investigating an early morning fiery crash Monday that has left one person dead and three others injured. The crash happened around 4:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-294 around the 14.5 mile marker near Alsip and Worth, according to Illinois State Police.

Illinois State Police said a semi-truck hit a car for “an unknown reason.” The semi-truck rolled over and the car became engulfed in flames. Witnesses on the scene told police that the driver of the car could not get out of the vehicle.

Two people in the car were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The truck driver received minor injuries. Some northbound lanes on the Tri-State Tollway remain closed while the crash is investigated and crews clean up the wreckage, WGN-News reported. As of 9:50 a.m. Monday, three northbound lanes have been opened, allowing some traffic to get through. The Tri-State was shut down between 111th and 159th Streets.
