The officer, who had removed his firearm from his duty holster while using the restroom, realized the firearm was missing shortly after students were dismissed for the day.
After an unsuccessful search of the bathroom for the weapon, police said hallway surveillance images were immediately reviewed, which determined a limited number of persons entered the restroom. Soon thereafter, notification of a firearm theft was made to school and police officials.
Authorities said the Village and AHPD have been in close contact with school officials throughout Tuesday, "collaboratively sharing pertinent information related to the case and reviewing safety protocols."
Uniformed police will remain on campus throughout the school day, following safety protocols, including restricted access and metal detector screening.
"We value the trust our community places in the Police Department and its officers," Arlington Heights Police Chief Nicholas Pecora said. "We remain committed to resolving this situation and ensuring that all responsible parties are held accountable, including matters within our own organization."
