Arlington Heights, Barrington Road I-90 Interchanges Face Lane Reductions: IL Tollway

The work is part of the Tollway's $15 billion Move Illinois capital program and $2 billion Bridging the Future capital plan.

NORTHWEST SUBURBS, IL — Lane reductions and traffic shifts are scheduled to begin next week at the Arlington Heights Road and Barrington Road interchanges on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway, with work on toll plaza upgrades expected to continue through the end of the year at one site and into 2027 at the other.

The Illinois Tollway said the work will include toll plaza canopy removal and other improvements intended to improve traffic flow and operations. Electronic message signs and construction signs will be installed in advance to alert drivers to lane closures and traffic shifts, according to the agency. The Tollway also said all work is weather dependent and updated information will be posted in its Daily Construction Alert online.

Extended lane reductions and traffic shifts are scheduled through the end of the year at the Arlington Heights Interchange on westbound I-90. Similar traffic changes are scheduled into 2027 at the Barrington Road Interchange on eastbound I-90. According to the Tollway, the work is needed for removal of toll plaza canopies and a barrier wall, along with installation of new monotube and tolling infrastructure.

On Sunday, March 29, the ramp carrying traffic from westbound I-90 to Barrington Road is scheduled to be reduced to a single lane for similar work.

The Tollway said weekend-long detours at both locations will be scheduled later this year for toll equipment installation. Closures and detours are being coordinated with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Cook County, the Village of Arlington Heights, Elk Grove Village, the Village of Hoffman Estates, the Village of Barrington and local fire and police departments.
