Arlington Heights Police Ramp Up St. Paddy's Day DUI Enforcement

Police are warning drivers to not drive drunk as Thursday's holiday approaches.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — "Drive sober or get pulled over" is a mantra the Arlington Heights Police Department is reminding residents of as they get set for St. Patrick's Day on Thursday. Police have been conducting extra driving under the influence enforcement since last Friday and will continue to do so through this Friday.

The increased enforcement is part of the Drive Sober Or Get Pulled Over and Drive High Or Get a DUI campaigns from the United States Department of Transportation.

In addition to looking for alcohol and drug impaired drivers, police said they will be stepping up seatbelt, speeding, and distracted driving enforcement. Other traffic laws will also be strictly enforced.

While designating a sober driver is the simplest way to avoid a tragic crash or DUI arrest, here are some additional tips to stay safe from Arlington Heights police:

  • If a friend is about to drive impaired, take their keys and help them get home safely.
  • Buckle up. It’s your best defense in the event of a crash.
  • Remember, pedestrians are at risk, too. If you’re walking, keep an eye out for cars. If you’re driving, remain alert for impaired walkers who may not obey street signs.

The St. Patrick’s Day enforcement effort is made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
