"Here at Movoto Real Estate, we’ve been ranking cities all over the country—and many times, even discussing places as far away as London or the Mushroom Kingdom. So we thought, why not bring it a little closer to home and really focus in the best cities in one state in particular?"

The list was compiled based on amenities like shopping and dining, cost of living, crime, education, employment and home value. Cities were ranked with a score from 1 to 50 in each of the criteria.

Movoto points to Arlington Heights high home values, which are 102 percent higher than the rest of the state, as one of the main reasons it mades its list. The blog also said Arlington Heights downtown is "booming" and residents earn about 30 percent more than residents in other parts of the state.

Other local towns to make the list include Palatine, which was ranked at No. 9; and Mount Prospect, which was ranked at No. 10. Taking the top spot was Northbrook, followed by Highland Park and Glenview.
