Arlington Heights School Produces Music Video to 'Pack the Pantry'

South Middle School got creative for charity; students produce a music video to publicize project and make "Pack the Pantry" a success.

South Middle School collected more than 9,000 items to “Pack the Pantry,” a food drive to benefit the Wheeling Township Food Pantry.

Organized by the student council, the Arlington Heights school started collecting food items Thursday, Dec. 13. –But this was not your typical food drive.

Every home base teacher and class got involved and had a lot of fun promoting the project and packing the pantry. South Middle School students and faculty really got creative to collect more than 9,000 donations in just two weeks.

A teacher wrote new words to the popular song ‘Gangnam Style’ that South Middle School played to publicize the food drive. The ‘Pack the Pantry South’ song became so popular, the school ended up making a music video to get the kids involved.

Some students even took it upon themselves to go out with a friend in their home base class and collect items from their neighborhoods.

Two weeks after collections began, South Middle School sent more than 9,000 items to the Wheeling Township Food Pantry.

Students packed the South Stage with food to donate to the Wheeling Township Food Pantry Thursday. According to school officials, about 9,050 items were collected in total.

The school had so many donations, some of the PE classes helped student council members, teachers, administrators and custodians fill the trucks Thursday.

The school will be sending about 1,500 more items to the food pantry Monday, Jan.7. The extra items will be purchase with the gate receipts from our boys’ basketball game against Lincoln Middle School in Mount Prospect. Lincoln Middle School shared the gate funds with South Middle School to buy the additional donations for the Wheeling Township Food Pantry.
