According to the Illinois State Board of Education, schools who receive the Academic Excellence Award must have at least 90 percent of elementary and middle students meeting or exceeding state standards in reading and math for three straight years.

"Schools that receive Academic Excellence Awards tend to remain on the honor roll year after year, and many of them raise their level of performance," according to the ISBE's Illinois Honor Roll website
