Black Lives Matter Car Protesters Promote Positive Message

The event was organized by the nonpartisan community engagement group V.O.C.A.L. of Arlington Heights.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — Nearly 75 cars took part in a Black Lives Matter parade protest Friday night, originating from First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights. Participants decorated their cars with paint, homemade signs and other creative ideas on the Juneteenth holiday.

The event was organized by V.O.C.A.L. (Voices of Community, Acceptance & Love) of Arlington Heights. The nonpartisan community engagement group "aims to be a positive voice for Arlington Heights and the surrounding suburbs," according to its Facebook page. The group was started in December 2016 by six women in Arlington Heights who were inspired by their love of family and community. V.O.C.A.L. welcomes people of all backgrounds, races, religions, sexual orientations, gender identifications and political beliefs to join our mission towards a safer and more loving community.

Attendees were asked to remain in their cars as a safety measure for those at high-risk for COVID-19. Donations were welcome for Jack and Jill, Inc., a membership organization of mothers with children ages 2 – 19, dedicated to nurturing future African American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty.

Soon after the parade, a Juneteenth remembrance service was held in the parking lot of First Presbyterian Church of Arlington Heights. The service was organized by the church, and included music, scripture, much reflection, and prayer. Attendees were asked to wear masks and follow COVID-19 guidelines at the free event.
