Collection Event For Homeless Vets Postponed Due To Coronavirus

The Arlington Heights and Palatine American Legion posts said restrictions prevent them from collecting the items.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, IL — A collection drive for homeless veterans that was scheduled to begin Friday has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Greg Padovani, chairman of the Veterans Memorial Committee of Arlington Heights and a Village Trustee, said American Legion Post 208 (Arlington Heights) and American Legion Post 690 (Palatine) will not be able to accept donations until the restrictions are lifted.

Through Military Outreach USA, which collects household items to support veterans exiting homelessness, the event was scheduled to run through Nov. 12.

"These are veterans who will be moving into their first apartment or home after being homeless," Padovani said in an email regarding whom the drive serves. "Typically, these veterans will move into an empty space. So they will need everything from kitchen items and cleaning supplies to linens and toiletries."
