An investigation revealed that as a result of impact between the two cars, a 2006 Honda Accord driven by Hunt mounted the curb, struck a traffic signal control box and came to rest in a gas station parking lot.

Police said Mendoza, driving a 2015 Nissan Sentra, was injured and taken to Northwest Community Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Based on preliminary information gained from at-scene witnesses, along with physical evidence, police believe the Hunt was traveling northbound on Arlington Heights Road at Golf Road, passing through the intersection on a green traffic signal when Mendoza disobeyed the westbound traffic signal, passed through a red light and struck the Honda.

The Specialized Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team, part of the suburban Major Case Assistance Team, responded to the crash and assisted police.
