Fire Causes 'Heavy Damage' At Prospect Heights Strip Mall: City

The Tuesday afternoon fire started in the backroom of a Subway, according to officials.

PROSPECT HEIGHTS, IL — An electrical fire that started at a Subway restaurant Tuesday afternoon spread to other nearby businesses in a strip mall and caused "heavy damage." There are no reported injuries and the fire remains under investigation.

According to the City of Prospect Heights, the fire started around 12:30 p.m. with both the fire and police departments reporting to the 1200 block of Elmhurst Road. The fire began in the backroom of the Subway due to an electrical panel catching on fire.

With the assistance of the Wheeling Police Department, all businesses and residences in the area were evacuated. The fire occurred across the street from Wheeling High School, according to officials. The fire spread through several adjacent buildings to Subway.

During the subsequent investigation, the northbound and southbound lanes of Elmhurst Road (between Prospect Drive and Hintz Road) were closed. Hintz Road, between Willowbrook Drive and Elmhurst Road, were also closed.

In addition, fire departments from Wheeling, Morton Grove, Northfield, Northbrook, Arlington Heights, Palatine, Elk Grove, Lincolnshire, Des Plaines, Mount Prospect, Park Ridge, Rosemont, North Maine, Buffalo Grove, Long Grove, Glenview, Deerfield, Bannockburn, Rolling Meadows, as well as Division 3 MARBAS, the state fire marshall, Nicor and ComEd assisted.
