Braces With Medical Card in Illinois

If you have Illinois Medical Card dental insurance, your child's orthodontic treatment may be covered by the Medical Card . However, not all patients covered by the Medical Card will be eligible for braces. Your child must be pre-approved for braces before an orthodontist can begin treatment.

To be eligible for pre-approved orthodontic coverage, your child must have all of his or her permanent teeth (children typically shed all of their baby teeth by age 11-13). Early interceptive orthodontic treatment is not covered by the Medical Card.

Does my child automatically qualify for orthodontic treatment coverage?

No. All children's administrators must pre-approve all patients for braces before an orthodontist can begin treatment.

How can I know if my child's orthodontic treatment will be covered?

The first step for pre-approval is the initial orthodontic consultation. During the complimentary consultation, the orthodontist will evaluate your child and take photographs of their teeth. The photographs are taken at no cost to you. After the photographs are taken, we will submit them to the Public Aid/All Kids administrators. After an orthodontic case is submitted for pre-approval, it typically takes 2-3 weeks for the case to be evaluated at the state level. After the case is reviewed, you will receive a letter from DentaQuest or Liberty of Illinois indicating whether your child is approved or denied. If the case is determined to be severe enough, your child will be approved for treatment to be covered by the Medical Card/All Kids insurance. Unfortunately, a case can only be submitted once in a lifetime, therefore, previously denied cases cannot be resubmitted. If your child was approved for braces, most of the treatment will be covered by the Medical Card .

Are ceramic braces or clear Invisalign covered by the Medical Card/All Kids Insurance in Illinois?

If you would like clear ceramic braces, you are responsible for paying the difference between the cost of regular braces and the cost of clear braces. Monthly payments are available for ceramic braces and Invisalign.
